Turning the setting into the subject

For Canvas + Classics, I partnered with a local classic car club to create an original painting of a vintage truck from their collection, then developed it into a guided, step-by-step workshop designed for all skill levels.

Creating a custom workshop is about more than designing the finished painting. I paint the project myself beforehand, working through the composition, color palette and techniques to consider how each step will translate when I’m teaching it to a group. The goal is a project that feels distinctive to the event, but still relaxed and approachable for guests.

That preparation also gives me a chance to thoughtfully shape the experience—where a little more guidance may be helpful, where there’s room to play, and how to keep the workshop flowing naturally without feeling rushed or overly structured.

The project came full circle in the showroom lounge, where we painted together with the vintage truck that inspired the artwork right beside us.
